About the Opportunity

We are seeking an knowledgeable and results-driven Production Manager to oversee the dynamic and impactful productions the community has come to love at The Avenue. Reporting to the Executive Artistic Director, the Production Manager supervises all stage and educational productions and events for The Avenue Blackbox Theatre and Avenue Children’s Theatre Project. This position will be responsible for budgeting, scheduling work, ordering supplies, and coordinating various aspects of production in alignment with the mission and values of The Avenue Blackbox, Inc. This position will also serve to mentor and train young people and emerging volunteer and contract talent at The Avenue.

Position Description: 

Reporting to the Executive Artistic Director, the Production Manager supervises all stage and educational productions and events for The Avenue Blackbox Theatre and Avenue Children’s Theatre Project. This position will be responsible for budgeting, scheduling work, ordering supplies, and coordinating various aspects of production. This position will also serve to mentor and train young people and emerging volunteer and contract talent at The Avenue. 

Duties include:

  • Budget management & reporting for all production activities. 

  • Labor scheduling & reporting for all production and shop needs. 

  • Facilitation of production and design meetings, and other communication between artistic and production teams. 

  • Create and manage production calendars ensuring timelines are communicated and stay on track. 

  • Assist Executive Artistic Director with contract administration for designers, assistants, cast and youth personnel.

  • Negotiate pricing and procure technical elements needed for each production. 

  • Ensure that all Avenue productions maintain standards of artistry.

  • Ensure that all Avenue productions are visually documented for archival and promotional purposes (photography and/or video)

  • Ensure timely completion of construction of scenic elements, load-in, lighting, and sound installation, as well as strike, equipment return and proper restoration of the space.

  • Plan and facilitate orderly, professional load in and out of on and off site spaces for community productions and tours.


Additionally the Production Manager will be responsible for ensuring efficient stage management of all company productions.


The Production Manager will  perform or prepare/supervise assistant stage manager to perform all stage manager duties for each production including: 

  • scheduling and running rehearsals

  • communicating the director's wishes to designers and crafts people

  • training and mentoring new stage management talent including youth

  • coordinating the work of the stage crew

  • calling cues and possibly actors' entrances during performance

  • overseeing the entire show each time it is performed


Required Qualifications

  • Experience in stage and/or production management for theatre, dance, opera, or other live events. 

  • Experience in youth education or youth development. Comfortable working with youth in a caring, mentoring role.

  • Exemplary communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Event management skills, especially for community engagement. 

  • Mastery of common office software, especially Microsoft Office suite, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, and Zoom. 

  • Mastery of Google Drive, Dropbox, and other file-sharing platforms. 

  • Above average computer skills, including experience working in MacOS. 

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of theatre production and stage management tools and software (QLab, Vectorworks or other CAD software.) 

  • Experience in various production disciplines, including carpentry, rigging, sewing, lighting, sound, and projections.

  • Experience leading and managing groups of artistic and production collaborators. 

  • Experience with labor relations, specifically with IATSE, USA, AFM, AEA, and SDC contracts and rules.
